What Home Care in Calamvale Looks Like

Calamvale was designed for families wanting a home to grow into in the 1990s and 2000s. Those families have grown, and the people who bought first are now the ones needing support in houses built for a different stage of life.

Big houses, smaller households

Scale is the most notable characteristic of Calamvale housing. Four bedrooms, two living rooms, a double garage, a fairly large yard, houses constructed for a family of five, on blocks that required a weekend to keep up when you were just forty-five.

Now, after 25 years, many of those houses have one or two people living in them. The kids have all moved out. The size of the yard is the same. The size of the house remains the same. The effort required to run it has not decreased one bit, while the capacity to do it has.

This creates a very specific situation in Calamvale: a person who can take care of their personal needs fine and wouldn't depend on anyone, but who is gradually losing to the house. Rooms that stop being used because they are too much to clean. A yard that gets away. Gutters and windows untouched for 3 years. Laundry that piles up because the machine is in the garage down a step.

Domestic assistance is generally the appropriate first service here, and it is the one people refuse most often, because asking for help with cleaning feels like an admission in a way that accepting a nurse does not. To say it clearly: the point of this funding is to keep a large home manageable, and using it early keeps people in their homes far longer than waiting until personal care is required.

A genuinely multicultural suburb

Calamvale is a highly multicultural suburb, with significant Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese, Sri Lankan and Filipino populations as well as long-standing Australian-born residents. A significant number of immigrants came in the 1990s and 2000s during the construction of the suburb, meaning there is now a strong group of people in their seventies.

We match support workers on language, cultural background and gender where it is needed, Mandarin, Cantonese, Hindi, Punjabi, Vietnamese, Tamil and others. The combination that appears most often in Calamvale is to request someone who can speak the language, be of the right gender for personal care, and know the food and home practices without having to be told everything.

When calling, there are two points to make. Be precise about the exact language: Hindi is not the same as Punjabi, Mandarin is not the same as Cantonese, and a mismatch here is as bad as no match at all. And say if gender is a factor in personal care, as it is in many homes. Both are unfussy requests, and both are facts about the roster that we plan around.

Getting around the southern suburbs

Calamvale is a car suburb, with good local shopping options at Calamvale Central and Sunnybank Hills Shoppingtown. There is less public transport than in the inner ring, and when a person ceases to drive their world shrinks rapidly and quietly.

That's why transport support has more power here than on a service list. For a person who has given up their licence, getting to the shops, to appointments, to a place of worship, to family, that is the difference between an ordinary life and effective house arrest. It is a fundable service and one of the most beneficial elements that a Calamvale home can add to a plan.

For appointments, QEII Jubilee at Coopers Plains, Logan Hospital and Sunnybank Private are all reachable. We arrange transport that includes going in with the person where they would like that.

What families here tell us most often

There are two recurring themes in Calamvale, both worth naming because they are important and families often think they are alone in them.

The first is guilt. Growing up in these homes, adult children often feel like a failure when they arrange paid help, as they would like to be able to do it themselves. A large number of them are parents too, with full-time jobs. Let's be honest: using funding your parent is entitled to is not a lack of duty, and families who seek support early almost always keep their parent at home longer than those who wait, often avoiding a move into residential aged care or an aged care home altogether.

The second is the driving conversation. Losing your licence is a much greater loss in a car suburb such as Calamvale than it is closer to the city, and people resist it hard, sometimes continuing to drive well past the point of safety because the alternative is isolation. If you have reliable transport support in place, that conversation becomes so much easier; you're not taking anything away, you're offering something else.

Start with the house

Domestic assistance is often the most appropriate service to look at in Calamvale, and if it's used early, people spend a lot longer in large homes.

Why Families Choose Us

Most providers send the person that is rostered. We do things differently, with personalised care, and it changes both what you pay and who walks through your door.

Local workers, not dispatched ones

We consider first who already lives in the vicinity of Calamvale. A worker travelling across Brisbane arrives late, charges travel, and eventually stops taking the shift. A local one lasts years.

You choose your own support worker

Before anything is arranged, you talk to or meet people and you make your own decision. It is a person-centred approach: if the first person is not the right fit, we keep looking, that is normal, not a complaint.

Your funding buys more hours

Because there is no agency margin between you and your worker, our rates are approximately $40 to $65 an hour, compared to $65 to $85 at traditional agencies. On a mid-level classification, that is approximately three additional hours of support per week.

The same person, week after week

Continuity is what makes support work. A person familiar with your habits recognises the changes; that's how problems are detected before they turn into emergencies.

Straight answers about money

We will send you a comprehensive written price list before you sign up, tell you what your funding will cover, and if we are not the right fit for what you need, we will let you know.

What Home Care Costs in Calamvale

Very few providers of aged care services advertise rates. We do, because comparing them is the best thing you can do, and ours hold up.

Service With Support Network Typical full-service agency
Personal care, weekday $40–$65/hr $65–$85/hr
Domestic assistance $40–$58/hr $60–$80/hr
Social support & community access $40–$60/hr $62–$82/hr
Overnight sleepover Flat rate, from ~$250 $250–$400/night
Nursing & allied health Fully funded, $0 to you Fully funded, $0 to you

Indicative Brisbane ranges for 2026. Loadings are applicable on weekends and public holidays. A complete written price list is provided before you make a commitment.

What that difference is worth

Take a Classification 5 participant: $39,697 per year, or $9,924 per quarter. Once the 10 percent care management deduction is factored in, there is approximately $8,932 per quarter for services.

Hourly rate paid Hours per quarter Hours per week
$80, typical agency rate 111.6 about 8.6
$58, with Support Network 154 about 11.8

This equates to an additional three and a quarter hours of support per week, from the same funding.

What You Contribute

Your contribution is a percentage of the service price, determined by an assessment of income and assets by Services Australia. Everyone can access clinical care free of charge. Personal care and other independence services cost 5 to 50 percent according to your means; everyday living services (cleaning and gardening) 17.5 to 80 percent.

A full pensioner paying for a $62 hour of personal care contributes $3.10. A self-funded retiree (without a health card) pays $31. Neither pays anything for nursing.

One piece of paperwork worth doing

Where there is no income and assets assessment completed with Services Australia, a person is considered "means not disclosed" and charged the highest contribution rate, regardless of their actual income and assets. Others avoid it for privacy, and as a consequence may be charged self-funded-retiree rates on their pension income.

Do not let funding go to waste

Support at Home funding is paid quarterly, and you can carry over only $1,000 or 10% of the quarterly budget, whichever is greater. Above that is returned to the government at the end of the quarter. On Classification 6, underspending by $5,000 in a quarter means forfeiting approximately $3,825 for good.

This is monitored on behalf of the people we support and flagged while there is still time to bring services forward.

No hidden charges

Separate administration or entry/exit fees are not allowed. The entire price is the service price.

Rates are not fixed, as price caps were introduced for 1 July 2026 but put on hold in May 2026. Your protection is to compare published price lists.

Funded separately

Rails and ramps do not eat into your service hours, as they come from the equipment and home modification stream.

Restorative Care, up to $6,000 for about 16 weeks, typically following hospital care or a fall.

Four steps, and the first is a phone call, and it's free.

Tell us what you need

Call 1300 671 931. Give us your street in Calamvale, the type of home, your classification (if applicable) and the support you are seeking. If you don't have funding yet, we will give you an overview of what you can expect from My Aged Care.

We look for workers nearby

We begin with those who already live near you, and match your requests: times, gender, language, experience. You see who is available, not someone who's assigned.

You meet them and decide

Talk to or meet the people we recommend before committing to anything. You choose. If the first person is not right, we continue the search.

Support starts, and we stay in touch

Your worker starts on the agreed schedule. We make sure it is working, keep an eye on your quarterly budget to avoid losing anything, and we adjust when needed.

Do not have funding yet?

Start with My Aged Care on 1800 200 422. The time from approval to funding is usually three to six months, so it is advisable to get started ahead of an urgent need for help. Many families use us privately while waiting and then continue with the same worker when their plan starts.

Most important tip: when you're being assessed, talk about the worst day of a typical week, not the best day. Often assessments take place on a good morning and families soften the picture out of protectiveness, so that the classification becomes a reflection of performance and not life.

Coming home from hospital?

Call before discharge, not afterwards. Support put in place during someone's hospital stay is best, rather than hastily put together afterwards, and it is the most important measure in preventing readmission to the hospital.

Questions People Ask Us

Yes. We have support workers available throughout Calamvale and the surrounding area, such as Stretton, Sunnybank Hills, Algester, Parkinson and Drewvale. The one thing we pay attention to when you call us is having someone who lives close by, not someone who has to spend time travelling across Brisbane for the job.

Yes, and in Calamvale it is often the right place to begin. Domestic assistance and garden maintenance are fundable services under Support at Home. They sit in the everyday living category, so they attract a higher contribution than personal care, but they are legitimate support, and on a large family home they are frequently what keeps a person in the house for many years longer.

Yes. Calamvale is one of Brisbane's most diverse suburbs and we match on language, cultural background and gender. When you call, let us know the exact language you want to speak, as Hindi and Punjabi are distinctly different, and let us know if gender matters in your household when it comes to personal care.

The hourly rate for our support workers is usually $40 to $65 for personal care and domestic support, whereas the average hourly rate through traditional full-service agencies is approximately $65 to $85. Weekend and public holiday loadings apply. Nursing and allied health are completely government subsidised under Support at Home, and therefore cost you nothing regardless of income or assets. A comprehensive written price list is sent before you place an order.

No. We assist Support at Home participants, people who have moved from a Home Care Package, clients of the Commonwealth Home Support Programme, and privately funded families. Many people begin using us privately while they wait for funding to be allocated, then continue with the same worker once they receive the funding.

Home Care Packages were replaced by Support at Home on 1 November 2025. These are divided into eight classifications, with the lowest at level 1 at approximately $10,731 per year and the highest at level 8 at approximately $78,106 per year, released in quarterly budgets. 10% of every quarter is paid to care management before services are purchased. The amounts are indexed on 1 July, and you should check with My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 to confirm the current amounts.

Yes, this is the very essence of our work. Before you make arrangements you speak with or meet workers, and you choose who supports you; you can change if it's not the right fit. Compatibility is as important as qualifications, and support is personal work.

You can change at any time and your funding stays with you, there are no exit fees under the current rules. There's no disruption to your support as we take care of the transition, including handling matters with your previous provider. On the whole, people experience a much easier change than they'd anticipated.

From 1 October 2026, personal care (showering, dressing, grooming and continence support) will be classified as a clinical support, meaning it will be fully funded by the government, with no contribution required from the participant within your budget.

Most of the questions can be answered over the phone, and there's no commitment at the end of it.
