Allied health & therapy

Occupational therapy, physiotherapy and podiatry, including home assessments which can often minimise the amount of paid support needed.

Clinical services cost you nothing

Under Support at Home, nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and podiatry are fully government funded, and do not depend on your income or assets. Personal care is now fully funded as well, from 1 October 2026.

What Home Care in Capalaba Involves

Capalaba is the working hub of the Redlands, the place that everyone else goes to for the shops, the doctor and the bus. That has real advantages for home care, one big plus and one big minus.

The advantage of being the hub

Capalaba is unusual for an outer suburb in that it concentrates services. The shopping, the medical centres, the pharmacies and allied health are all accessible through Capalaba Central and Capalaba Park, which link the whole of the Redlands via the bus interchange.

That focus is very beneficial to a person who wants to age in place. It's possible to do the chemist, GP, bank and shopping as one trip, instead of three. Support hours go further when destinations are clustered, and a two-hour community access visit in Capalaba delivers the same impact as three in a more dispersed area.

It also means that the allied health someone needs, such as physiotherapy, podiatry and audiology, is mostly available locally rather than having to travel to Brisbane. Under Support at Home, allied health is clinical care and is therefore not income dependent, and having it nearby removes the transport barrier that prevents people from accessing it.

No train, and what that means

Here is the catch. The bus interchange is excellent, but Capalaba has no train station, the Cleveland line goes through Birkdale and Wellington Point to the north, but not Capalaba.

If you're a fit commuter, buses are ok. For an eighty-two-year-old who walks with a walker and has a hip that plays up, a bus and timetable, a walk to the stop and a transfer is another story altogether. What we observe time and time again is individuals who may have public transport options but do not actually take advantage of them, so that where there is a public transport system, there is no functional public transport service once driving is no longer an option.

Consequently, support for transport is one of the more important services in a Capalaba plan. Not just because it's a handy service, but because it's the one thing that ensures a person is able to stay in touch with their own life, appointments, shopping, the club, church, family. It's fundable, and it's worth building in deliberately instead of adding it on after someone has already withdrawn.

Mixed housing, mixed needs

The housing in Capalaba is a more diverse mix than the other Redlands suburbs. Older lowset brick homes, townhouses and units built in the 1970s and 1980s, some larger blocks backing onto bushland, and more and more over-50s and retirement communities are all in evidence.

This diversity accounts for differences in support needs from one house to another, greater than those in a uniform estate. The support required for a lowset brick house on a level block is very different from that for a two-storey townhouse with internal stairs and a small courtyard. When you call, telling us the type of home tells us more about what will be needed than almost anything else.

Two points come up often here. If you reside in a village for the over 50s or a retirement community, this will not impact your eligibility or funding for Support at Home, your unit is your home, and you are not required to use a care provider recommended by the village. It is worth checking what your village fees already provide, so that you don't pay for the same service twice. And if you face onto bushland, an OT assessment will look at outdoor pathways and lighting as well as indoors, because that is where falls happen.

Redland Hospital at Cleveland is the local public hospital, a short drive away, with the PA and QEII there for specialist care.

Starting before the crisis

The most typical scenario we encounter throughout the Redlands is a family waiting. Things are OK, then a little less OK, then someone falls and it has to be sorted out in a fortnight while they are in hospital.

Any support put in place in that window is inferior in every way. There is no time to meet workers or select someone who's appropriate, it's whatever is there that week, and the person getting support has no influence at a time when they already feel they can't control anything.

Starting earlier, when the person requires help with cleaning and shopping instead of personal care, is less expensive, and provides a genuine choice about who is coming in, while developing a relationship before it becomes critical. This also means that if something does occur, someone is already familiar with the home and is prepared to help rather than having to begin anew.

If you're reading this and everything's still mostly fine, it's the best time to call.

Retirement villages

Don't assume that you won't be funded or that you have to use the provider the village recommends. You can choose any provider you like.

Why Families Choose Us

The majority of providers send the person who is rostered. We work differently, with personalised support, and it changes both what you pay and who comes through your door.

Local workers, not dispatched ones

We start with who we see living nearby Capalaba. The Brisbane worker arrives late, charges are incurred, and eventually the worker no longer takes the shift. A local one lasts for years.

You choose your own support worker

You talk to or meet people before making arrangements and then you make the decision. If someone is not right, we continue our search, that's not a complaint.

Your funding buys more hours

Our rates are approximately $40 to $65 per hour compared with traditional agency rates of $65 to $85 per hour, since there is no agency margin between you and your worker. On a mid-level classification, that is around three additional hours of support weekly.

The same person, week after week

Support work is about continuity. Someone who knows your routines will see when something has changed, and that is how problems can be caught early, rather than becoming emergencies.

Straight answers about money

Before signing any agreement we provide you with a comprehensive written quotation, explain exactly what your funding covers, and tell you clearly if we are not the right fit for your needs.

What Home Care Costs in Capalaba

There is virtually no aged care provider who publishes rates. We do, because that's the most helpful thing you can do, and because ours hold up.

Service With Support Network Typical full-service agency
Personal care, weekday $40–$65/hr $65–$85/hr
Domestic assistance $40–$58/hr $60–$80/hr

Nursing & allied health Fully funded, $0 to you Fully funded, $0 to you

Indicative ranges for Brisbane 2026. Loadings are applicable for weekends and public holidays. Prior to your commitment we send a complete written price list.

What that difference is worth

Let's take a Classification 5 participant: $39,697 per year, which is $9,924 per quarter. After the 10 percent care management deduction, about $8,932 per quarter is left to spend on services.

Hourly rate paid Hours per quarter Hours per week
$80, typical agency rate 111.6 about 8.6
$58, with Support Network 154 about 11.8

This is about three and a quarter additional hours of support per week from the same funding.

What You Contribute

Your out-of-pocket contribution will be a percentage of the service price, determined by an income and assets assessment by Services Australia. All clinical services are free to everyone. Personal care and other independence services 5 to 50 per cent according to means; everyday living services (cleaning, gardening) 17.5 to 80 per cent.

A full pensioner pays $3.10 for a $62 hour of personal care. A self-funded retiree (no health card) pays $31. Neither pays anything for nursing.

One piece of paperwork worth doing

Services Australia will record your means as "means not disclosed" and charge you the maximum contribution rate if you have not done your income and assets assessment, irrespective of your actual means. Others forgo it for privacy reasons, and end up paying self-funded-retiree rates on their pension income.

Do not let funding go to waste

Support at Home funding is provided quarterly, and you can carry over only $1,000 or 10 percent of the quarterly budget, whichever is more. Everything above that is returned to the government at the end of the quarter. On Classification 6, underspending by $5,000 in a quarter means losing approximately $3,825 for good.

This is monitored for the individuals we support and highlighted in time to bring services forward.

No hidden charges

Providers cannot charge separate administration, entry or exit fees. The price of the service is the total price.

Rate caps were required to be implemented on 1 July 2026 but were deferred in May 2026, and therefore rates differ between providers. You are protected by comparing published price lists.

Funded separately

Equipment, assistive technology and home modifications come from their own stream, so rails and ramps do not cost you service hours.

Restorative Care: approximately $6,000, typically follows a hospital admission or a fall, and may be offered for up to 16 weeks.

Four steps, the first of which is a free phone call.

Tell us what you need

Call 1300 671 931. Provide your street in Capalaba, the type of dwelling, your classification (if applicable) and the assistance you are seeking. If you don't have funding available, we will tell you what you can expect from My Aged Care.

We look for workers nearby

We begin with individuals who live in the area, matching what you requested on time, gender, language and experience. You see who is available rather than being assigned someone.

You meet them and decide

Before any commitments are made, speak with or meet the individuals we recommend. You choose. If the first one is not right, then we continue looking.

Support starts, and we stay in touch

Your worker starts on the agreed schedule. We check it is working, monitor your quarterly budget and care plan, and adapt as necessary.

Do not have funding yet?

Start with My Aged Care on 1800 200 422. Approval to funding usually takes three to six months, so it is worthwhile to begin the process before you need assistance. A lot of families visit us privately and just go on with the same worker when their plan starts.

The most important tip: at your assessment, talk about the toughest day of a typical week, not the best one. Assessments usually take place on a good morning, families shade the truth to protect their parent, and the classification becomes a representation of performance, not life.

Coming home from hospital?

The priority is to call before discharge, not after. It's much better to arrange support during the hospital stay than to put it together once the person returns home, and the best single thing to reduce a readmission is to have support in place during the hospital stay.

Questions People Ask Us

Yes. Support workers are organised throughout Capalaba and the surrounding area, such as Alexandra Hills, Birkdale, Thorneside, Wellington Point, Ormiston. We actively seek workers who are already living nearby, not someone who has to be transferred across Brisbane, this is by far the biggest deciding factor in whether or not the arrangement works.

Yes, and in Capalaba it is one of the more useful services in a plan. Losing your licence is a real mobility challenge here, because this is a suburb without a train station and with a bus system that is hard to navigate for anyone with mobility challenges. We can arrange for the worker to come in with you at appointments, and the transport itself is fundable.

Your unit is your home, and living in a retirement village or over-50s community does not impact your eligibility, classification or funding for Support at Home. Importantly, you do not have to use a provider your village recommends or has an agreement with. You have complete freedom of choice of provider. It's important to know what services your village has already paid for, so that you're not paying for the same thing twice.

Our support worker rates are around $40 to $65 an hour for personal care and domestic duties, whereas the hourly rate for a full-service agency is around $65 to $85. Weekend and public holiday loadings apply. Under Support at Home, nursing and allied health are fully government funded and therefore not a cost to you in any sense, whether income or asset based. We provide a full written price list prior to any commitment.

No. We work with Support at Home participants, people who have transitioned from a Home Care Package, Commonwealth Home Support Programme clients, and privately funded families. The majority of people begin with us privately until they get funding, and then resume with the same person when their plan starts.

Home Care Packages were phased out and replaced by Support at Home on 1 November 2025. These are divided into eight categories, from the lowest of approximately $10,731 at level 1 to approximately $78,106 at level 8, all released quarterly in budgets. Care management receives 10% of every quarter before the services are purchased. Amounts are indexed on 1 July each year, call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 for current amounts.

Yes, and that's at the heart of our work. Before you make any arrangements you speak to or meet workers; you choose who supports you and you have the option to change if it is not right for you. Support is personal work, and compatibility is as important as qualifications.

You can change at any time and your funding follows you: there are no exit fees under the current rules. There is no gap in your support as we handle the changeover, including liaising with your previous provider. The majority of people find it much easier to switch than they initially thought.

From 1 October 2026, personal care, such as showering, dressing, grooming and support with continence, will be reclassified as a clinical support and will be 100% funded by the government, with no contribution from the participant within their agreed budget.
